and Last Year ...
|
A small but select group met the two wardens both who happen to be called John for a leisurely walk around the Messingham sand quarries in July. Because of the conditions our interest today was centered on butterflies, and we listed at least eleven different species.
Meadow Brown
Comma
Speckled Wood
Gate Keeper
Small White
Large White
Small Skipper
Painted Lady
Green Veined White
Essex Skipper
Tortoise
With some very big ponds it was not surprising that we saw some very big Dragonflies called Hawkers, Green Hawker and Brown Hawker. The two John's are real experts and as keen as mustard. This is a site which we will certainly visit again.

Sixteen members of U3A and friends had an excellent morning at the Lincolnshire Nature Reserve on 24th June. Amongst the more unusual birds seen, Whitethroat, Avocet, Gadwall, Little Grebe, Lapwing, Lark, Green Sandpiper, Shelduck, Reed Warbler, and some of us heard the Cuckoo for the first time this year.
After lunch we visited the meadows at Bratoft in search of the green winged orchid, alas we were too late and the field had been cut for hay.
