Situated on the edge of The Lincolnshire Wolds, Louth is often referred to as the Capital of the Wolds . It is the largest market town in the District of East Lindsey in Lincolnshire and is set on the eastern edge of the Wolds which is designated an Area of Outstanding natural beauty. The town has a population of around 17,000 and serves a surrounding area of a further 12,000 people. The Doomsday Book of 1086 recorded Louth as a prosperous market town. The town boasts some fine examples of Georgian and Victorian architecture and has the Greenwich Meridian of zero longitude passing through it.The livestock market on Thursdays is one of the last remaining in the county. St Church

One of the most fascinating buildings in the town's conservation area is the magnificent St James' Church which has the tallest parish church spire in England - soaring to an impressive 295 feet. The new Riverhead Theatre in Louth is a state - of - the art venue for anything from opera to the classics and rock to dance.

Louth and District U3A is now in its twelfth year and is non-political and dedicated to the furtherance of interests and knowledge. The ethos of the U3A is self help, so if you are not a member, why not come along and find out what it is all about.

Note from the Chairman

As the days shorten and the weather turns cooler we can look back and remember what the U3A has done in this year so far.

The interest groups continue to fulfil their purpose of providing opportunities for members to meet together and enjoy matters intellectual and social. Our thanks go to all the group leaders.

We also have to prepare for another major social event in our calendar, the U3A Christmas Party. Arrangements have been made but the Committee believe that some of you may be able to help to improve the general level of enjoyment.

Please let us know if you have material which would be suitable for background music during the meal itself, or music which would be enjoyed by the majority, for dancing to after the meal. Your committee is aware of the cost of ‘buying in' such things and also the need to keep the price of tickets as low as possible, to enable access to functions for as many members as possible. If you can help please let us know, preferably in written form.

I have written a short piece about the summer picnic which you will find elsewhere but the feedback from members has raised some important questions for us to answer.

The attendance at the picnic was, frankly, disappointingly low. If this was caused by matters we can address and rectify then I believe we are obliged to try. We have noted the following as possible reasons: ‘Busy on that day', ‘Nobody to go with,' ‘Have no transport,' Don't know how to get there,' ‘Where is it?' ‘I‘m new and don't know many people yet,' ‘None of my interest group are going,' ‘It's too expensive!' If any of these reasons apply to you, or you have others, please write them down and give them to a committee member and we will try to help where we can.
